Spider Season in Greater Western Sydney: What to Expect
From huntsmans in the garage to redbacks under outdoor furniture — your local guide to Sydney's spider season.

When is spider season?
In Greater Western Sydney — Merrylands, Parramatta, Granville, Auburn, Guildford — spider activity peaks from late spring through to autumn (October to April). Warm nights bring out the breeders, and humid summers fill backyards with the insects spiders feed on.
The species you'll actually encounter
- Huntsman — large, fast and harmless. Mostly a fright factor in cars and garages.
- Redback — venomous, found under outdoor furniture, in BBQs, letterboxes and garden sheds. Bites require medical attention.
- Black house spider — dark, builds messy webs around window frames and eaves.
- Garden orb-weaver — large overnight webs across paths; harmless and beneficial.
- Funnel-web — rare in flat suburban Western Sydney but possible after heavy rain. Treat any encounter as a medical emergency.
How professional spider control works
A standard treatment is an external residual spray applied around the eaves, window frames, fence lines, retaining walls and outdoor entertaining areas. The product binds to surfaces and stays active for 3–6 months, killing spiders that walk across it and removing the insects they hunt.
Between treatments
- Knock down webs weekly with a broom — it discourages re-spinning
- Shake out shoes, gardening gloves and outdoor cushions before use
- Keep outdoor lights off when not needed (lights attract the insects spiders eat)
Stop Bugs offers same-week spider treatments across all Western Sydney suburbs with a 6-month service warranty.
